What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a system of primary health care that integrates current, evidence-based science and traditional philosophy into a unique form of treatment which uses natural therapies to address the root cause of illness. Naturopathic doctors believe that disease can sometimes be  a symptom of the body trying to heal itself, and seek to treat the underlying disease process using natural, minimally invasive methods rather than medicate symptoms.

Naturopathic medicine has as it’s foundation of practice the Therapeutic Order which organizes the patient approach to prioritize lesser interventions first, like diet, lifestyle and nutrition before considering higher interventions like pharmaceutical medications and surgery.

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are highly educated primary care providers who graduate from accredited medical schools. We treat patients as the unique individuals they are, recognizing that health is not merely the absence of disease, but to thrive in all areas of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Naturopathic medicine emphasizes education and prevention, and uses natural therapies to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself.

Treatments may include clinical nutrition, lifestyle counselling, botanical/herbal medicine, supplementation, acupuncture and traditional Asian medicine, homeopathic medicine, and physical therapies. NDs  also offer many lab tests that aren’t available through other practitioners that help uncover the true reason that you’re not feeling well. NDs are compassionate and we care about healing our patients from the inside-out. Patients love their NDs.

Naturopathic medicine is real, and it works

NDs use cutting edge, evidence-based medicine and treatments that most MDs don’t use yet. Typically, it takes 20 years for research to be reviewed, accepted, and implemented into practice at most teaching hospitals. Naturopathic doctors are ahead of the curve, implementing the latest peer-reviewed studies while juxtaposing them against therapies that have been around for thousands of years with historical and scientific research supporting their safe and effective use. Just because NDs use natural therapies instead of pharmaceuticals whenever possible, doesn’t mean that the treatments are any less powerful or effective.

Naturopathic medicine is safe

Naturopathic doctor’s number one guiding principle is First, do no harm. The treatments we use have fewer side effects and fewer risks than most conventional treatments. We monitor for interactions between herbs, drugs, and nutrients and make sure that the treatments given to you have been established as safe practices.

Naturopathic doctors are real doctors

NDs are licensed by professional regulating bodies that hold them to high standards of care. They go through rigorous training that includes anatomy and physiology, diagnosis, and pathophysiology training akin to what MDs study. In addition to the standard medical curriculum, they also learn naturopathic philosophies and innovative ways of thinking about medicine. The education of a Naturopathic Doctor also includes over 1,000 clinical hours of real-world experience working with real patients to help them get better.

NDs know when to refer

When a case is outside of an our scope of practice, we refer you to health care providers who are able to treat you with the level of care you deserve. NDs love working as part of multidisciplinary, integrated health care teams, and can support you while you work with your oncologist or other specialist.

NDs only recommend supplements you need

Supplementing your diet with micronutrients and concentrated doses of natural substances is very effective at getting your health back on track. NDs know what supplements will work for you, what drugs they interact with, and when they’ve done their job and you don’t need them anymore. NDs prescribe supplements for only as long as they’re needed, and no longer.

NDs love their jobs!

Naturopathic doctors love helping people heal. We are drawn to the profession because we recognize that a holistic approach to health is best. Some of us healed our own illnesses with the help of naturopathic medicine, or saw our friends and family heal from diseases they’d been told were impossible to heal. Ask any ND why they love their job, and you’re bound to get a meaningful answer.
